Residential Construction DrawingsWindow and Door Schedule
The Schedule for Windows and Doors is an optional page created to assist the builder and the window and door suppliers. It describes the
quantity, size, description and other items relating to the building's windows and doors (and skylights).
Plans for small projects usually put this information on the floorplan and elevation pages,
unless manufacturer's info and model are required.
Size is expressed as width (in feet and inches), then height. So a 3068 is 3' 0" wide
by 6'8" high. It might also be shown as 3/0 6/8. Other abbreviations include:
dg (dual glazed), sc (solid core), sgd (sliding glass door), sh (single hung),
temp (tempered glass), lh and rh refer to the side that opens towards you. Clad refers
to exterior vinyl protection. X means fixed, O means open, so an XO opens on the right
side as viewed from the exterior.
Generally, wood and custom doors and windows might require rough openings with 2" more width and 4" more height than their listed size. Metal and vinyl units are framed
to their actual size.
Window and Door Schedule Example

The California Energy Compliance standards for fenestration (windows) limit the
total area of all windows to 20% or less of the conditioned square footage and
west facing to under 5%. However you can gain more window area if you add more
energy saving features elsewhere. Any window less than 18" from the floor or within
24" of a door must be tempered glass. Also, building codes require each bedroom to
have a fire egress window that opens a minimum of 5.7sf and is no higher than 44"
from the floor, no less than 20" wide and at least 24" high. Do not buy windows until you are sure they will comply.
